People are the way they are for a reason. A godly father once pulled his younger son aside and explained why the older brother’s life kept falling apart. The older son was gifted and dearly loved, but he would never take advice from the Lord, from his father, or from anyone who knew more than he did. The younger son had already learned the one thing his brother never did: he was willing to listen. God speaks the same lament over His people, who were suffering from wounds they brought on themselves. “Oh that My people would listen to Me.” He was ready to subdue their enemies and satisfy them with the finest of wheat and honey from the rock. There is none as blind as he who will not see, and none who suffers like he who will not listen. If you are suffering, take a hard look at why, and start listening to the Lord, to His Word, and to His people.
